Eskimo Kajaks; cover, cost and conditions
Eskimo built whitewater and touring kayaks from polyethylene in Germany, and today these boats are mostly in circulation as used boats; the Topo, Salto and Diablo are classics of the whitewater scene of the nineties and the two thousands. With boats of this age, the condition of the material is the decisive question.
Polyethylene becomes brittle over the years, particularly under UV exposure. A twenty year old hull that has spent a lot of time in the sun tears under load more readily than a new one, and this embrittlement is ageing, not an insured event. What is covered are events: being slit open on rock, collision, theft, storm damage, transport damage. With a boat value in the three figure range, however, hull insurance is a matter of arithmetic.
For whitewater paddlers, personal accident cover is the more important element. It applies to injuries on the water and when getting in and out, and in whitewater the risk of injury is the actual risk, not the value of the boat. We do not offer boat third-party liability for muscle powered kayaks; check your private liability insurance for the inclusion of watercraft.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is embrittlement of the polyethylene covered?
No, that is UV ageing and wear. What is covered are events: being slit open on rock, collision, theft, storm damage and transport damage.
What is the most important protection in whitewater?
Personal accident cover; in whitewater the risk of injury is the actual risk, regardless of the value of the boat.
The cover that fits

Nautical information What counts before you cast off, papers, equipment, waters
Licence
No licence required; muscle-powered craft are licence-free, federal waterways included.
Registration
No registration required. Some waters do ask for a local permit or sticker before you launch.
Waters
Inland lakes, rivers and the coast, mind nature-reserve rules; many stretches are closed seasonally.
Equipment
Buoyancy aid or lifejacket, buoyancy bags in the boat, spraydeck, a waterproof case for phone and papers, a whistle.
Cruising range
The agreed cruising range is stated in the policy and can be extended for a single trip at any time.
Weather
Offshore wind is the main risk: it carries you away from the bank and makes the return hard. Check wind direction and the gust forecast before you launch.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.
Series by Eskimo, with value and cover
Eskimo Diablo / Topolino (classic) is a kayak from Eskimo (Germany), built from 1975 to 1998, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €3,000.
Eskimo Topo / Kendo is a kayak from Eskimo (Germany), built from 1995 to 2020, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €2,000.
Wildwasser- und Tourenkajak is a kayak from Eskimo (Germany), built from 1980 to 2020, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €3,000.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a kayak accident cover comes first; liability is usually handled by your private policy. Hull cover deals with theft and transit damage.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
