Esquif Canoes; cover, cost and conditions
In Québec, Esquif builds open canoes from T-Formex, a successor to the earlier Royalex that combines impact resistance with repairability and has become the standard for whitewater canoes. Prospecteur and Canyon are whitewater boats that withstand contact with rock without deforming the way polyethylene does.
T-Formex can be repaired, and in insurance terms that is the advantage over polyethylene: a crack can be properly closed, and damage to the hull does not automatically mean a total economic loss. With a boat value in the four-figure range this justifies hull insurance, because a repair is the likely case, not a total loss.
In whitewater the line runs between normal use and a single event. Scratches, abrasion and slight deformation from contact with rock are part of normal use and are not a claim. Covered are gashes, breakage after the boat has become jammed, loss of the boat on an open stretch of water and theft. In whitewater, personal accident cover is the element that really counts; we do not offer third-party liability cover for boats propelled by muscle power.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Can T-Formex be repaired?
Yes, for Esquif too: unlike polyethylene a crack can be properly closed.
That is why a repair is the likely case and hull insurance makes sense.
Are scratches from contact with rock covered?
No, not for Esquif either: that is abrasion from normal use.
Covered are gashes, breakage after the boat has become jammed,
loss on an open stretch of water and theft.

For Esquif we do not offer separate boat liability cover; your personal liability insurance usually applies. Hull, legal expenses and accident cover we insure as for any other craft.
