FM; cover, cost and conditions
FM (Fram 19) stands for Fredriksstad Motorfabrikk, a Norwegian firm founded in 1910 by Chr. Halvorsen on Kråkerøy in Fredrikstad, originally under the name Fredriksstad Motorverksted. FM was first of all an engine maker. From 1963 it worked with the boatbuilder Roland A/S of Hisøya near Arendal on 21-foot glassfibre boats sold under the Fram name. FM supplied the engine and handled sales, and the boats left with FM motors of six to eight horsepower. At the factory, so the local history goes, people said they were selling an engine in nice wrapping. Engine production ended in 1985, though a few types were still made until 1998.
Our model records list four designs, three motorboats and one motor yacht. The Norcoaster, 6.4 metres long and built from 1965 to 1976, is the oldest entry. The Fram 21 also measures 6.4 metres and is listed from 1967 to 1978, the Fram 19 at 5.7 metres from 1971 to 1982. The Fram 25 is the largest at 7.63 metres and had the longest run, from 1969 to 1991; it is also the only motor yacht of the brand. On the Fram boats the number in the name roughly gives the length in feet. No design reaches into recent build years, and the last listed year is 1991.
Every Fram afloat is now at least three decades old, most of the designs a good deal more. Early glassfibre hulls tend to be sturdy, but transoms with wooden cores and the engine beds deserve a close check for rot and soft spots. Many boats will have swapped their original FM engine for a later diesel, and after such a change the alignment of shaft and engine is worth checking. Wiring from the period was simple and is often a patchwork by now, so a look behind the dashboard pays off. The Fram 19 and 21 are light enough to trail, while the Fram 25 offers a cabin for longer days on sheltered coastal water.
