Fulcrum Speedworks; cover, cost and conditions

Fulcrum Speedworks builds its boats in Bristol, Rhode Island, and its programme comes down to one unmistakable design: the UFO, a ten-foot catamaran that lifts onto hydrofoils and flies above the water. The name stands for Unidentified Foiling Object. It was developed by Dave Clark, the company's founder and president, together with his father Steve Clark, a pair well known to sailors from the International Canoe class. Series production began in the spring of 2017. The boat weighs about 110 pounds, travels on a car roof and, according to the sailing press, takes off in around eight knots of breeze. The yard lays up the hulls with a deliberately heavy triaxial glassfibre laminate.

Our model records hold a single entry, the Foiling UFO, listed as a sailing catamaran of 3.2 metres. The records start with build year 2015 and the design runs on into the most recent build years. There is no larger sister, no motor version and no second line in our data, which makes the brand easy to sum up: one platform, built continuously for about a decade. An early boat from the first production seasons and a new one share the same basic recipe of ten feet, two hulls and a set of hydrofoils.

A foiler asks for a different kind of attention than a classic beach cat. The foils and their mounts take the loads of every take-off and touchdown, so the front edges, tips and the cases that hold them deserve a close look for chips and cracks, and shallow launching spots are where most dings happen. Because the boat is light enough for a roof rack, check the hull bottoms for scuffs from carrying and loading. On a used UFO, ask how it was stored, look at the trampoline and the fittings that hold the rig, and make sure the foils still sit firmly without play. Many owners sail from beaches, so rinsing sand and salt out of moving parts after each session pays off.

Series by Fulcrum Speedworks, build years and cover

Foiling UFO

Foiling UFO is a cabin catamaran from Fulcrum Speedworks, built since 2015.

What this means for the cover

As the Foiling UFO by Fulcrum Speedworks series is still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Foiling UFO by Fulcrum Speedworks series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
