Futuro Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Futuro Boats is a young brand from the Polish Tricity of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot, with Gdynia given as its base. It was founded by two engineers, Maximilian Kreft and Marcin Zając, who had previously designed and built large steel and aluminium structures at a Dutch shipyard. They built the first prototype themselves: a marine aluminium boat 5.5 metres long and 2 metres wide, for eight people, with either a combustion engine or an electric motor. It made its debut at a water sports fair in Marina Gdynia. The German electric boat company Mizu Marine has since taken a stake in Futuro and distributes the boats in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Hulls are still welded in Poland, while final assembly has moved to Hilzingen near Lake Constance.

Our model records hold two motorboats, and both reach into the most recent build years. The ZX 20 is listed from 2015 at 5.5 metres, and the ZX 25 follows from 2018 at 7.5 metres. Variants also turn up on the market, such as a stretched ZX20 L and the all electric ZX 20 E, which our list does not show separately. Both core models are open boats for lakes, rivers and inshore waters, and the ZX 25 carries CE design category C. The two metres between them separate a handy trailer boat from a larger day boat with more deck space.

Welded aluminium is tough and light, and it shrugs off knocks that would chip a gelcoat hull. What it does not forgive is the wrong metal in the wrong place: stainless fittings, a copper based antifouling or a poorly isolated shore power lead can start galvanic corrosion, so anodes need checking every season. On a used boat, look along the welds and around the transom where the engine bracket sits. With electric versions, ask about battery age, charging history and the state of the cabling. Most of these boats live on trailers, so bearings, brakes and lights matter too.

What this means for the cover

As the ZX 20 and ZX 25 by Futuro Boats series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the ZX 20, ZX 25 by Futuro Boats series:

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.

Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
