Ganz Boats is a Swiss yard in Zurich, on the shore of Lake Zurich. The family name has a past there: from 1972 to 2000 the Ganz business built sailing boats. In 2005 the son took over the premises and the company and started again, this time with motorboats. The result is a line of fast open boats with a design of their own, drawn by the owner himself and, since 2013, together with the naval engineer Davide Leone. According to the boating press, standard hulls are polyester mouldings from an Italian supplier, while custom versions are built in epoxy with aramid fibre. A Ganz stands out for its own distinctive design, its open cockpit and careful detailing.

A Ganz is a day boat for lakes and sheltered coast, usually well finished and often towed from one lake to the next. On a used example, the finish tells a lot: check the upholstery seams, the canvas and its fastenings, and the teak or synthetic decking where feet and fenders rub. Gelcoat on dark hulls shows scratches and fading quickly, so look at it in daylight. Ask whether the hull is a standard polyester moulding or one of the custom epoxy builds, as repairs differ. The trailer should match the boat and be in good order, with working lights and brakes. Engine hours and service records matter more than the year on the paperwork.
