GH Båt A/S; cover, cost and conditions
The letters GH stand for Gunn Hegna, a Norwegian retail chain that wanted to sell its own boats packaged with Yamaha outboards. To get them, the company turned to the Norwegian designer Otto Scheen jr., who drew a series of cottage boats: small open craft for the holiday cabin, the skerries and a few hours of fishing. The GH 14 came first, introduced in 1972 according to the Norwegian boating press, followed by the GH 17, GH 11 and GH 15 and later a GH 22. The boats were built by Rana Plast, which took over the moulds in the 1990s. A GH is easy to recognise by its plain open layout with thwarts and its high, straight topsides.
Our model records hold ten designs, all motorboats, spanning 1973 to 2012; none runs into recent build years. Two phases stand out. The first includes the GH 11, GH 13 and GH 15, listed from 1983 to 1990, plus the GH 14, which runs from 1973 to 1994. The second starts in 2004 with the GH 23 DC and continues from 2005 with the GH 14 Classic, GH 14 S, GH 460 S, GH V 11 and GH V 20, all listed until 2012. The smallest are the GH 11 and GH V 11 at 3.4 metres, the largest the GH 23 DC at 6.85 metres. Eight of the ten designs stay under five metres.
Most GH boats on the market today are small, older open boats with an outboard, and they have usually led a practical life. Look at the transom first: it carries the engine, and on an older hull it is worth checking for flexing or soft spots around the bracket. Check the drainage and the bilge, since open boats take in rain. The high, straight sides give plenty of room aboard but also catch the wind, which the Norwegian press noted in its test of the GH 14 S, so berthing in a crosswind takes some care. A small boat like this is easy to trail, so the trailer deserves the same inspection as the hull.
