Glassmaster; cover, cost and conditions
Glassmaster was the boat division of the Glassmaster Plastics Company in Columbia, South Carolina. It began building boats in 1958 and was among the first companies to work with fibreglass reinforced plastic. Early boats were 14 and 17 footers; later the range grew into fishing rigs, ski boats, hardtops and cuddy cabins with outboard or sterndrive power, built in South Carolina and Oklahoma, and in the late eighties a 26 foot aft cabin express joined them. Several model names add a suffix such as CC, CB or WF after the number to mark the version.
Our model records list ten Glassmaster motorboats from build years 1985 to 1995. Seven belong to the S range: the S 164, S 179, S 187 CB, S 187 CC, S 191, S 225 and S 258. The 176 CC, 196 CC and 225 WF carry no S, so three models in all wear the CC suffix. Most are recorded from 1987 to 1994, with the S 187 CB starting in 1985 and the S 191 running to 1995. Lengths go from 4.72 metres for the S 164 to 7.4 metres for the S 258; six models stay under 5.5 metres, the S 191 measures 5.61 and the S 225 and 225 WF 6.4 metres each.
A Glassmaster today is a trailer boat with three decades or more behind it. Transom core, stringers and floor are the spots to check, since water that gets into the laminate over the years shows there first. Upholstery and gauges are often replaced. Kept on a trailer under a tarpaulin, launched for day trips, fishing or skiing, these boats still make a simple, practical runabout.
