Glasspar Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Glasspar was one of the pioneers of the plastic boat. In 1947 Bill Tritt began building hulls of glass-reinforced plastic in his shop in Costa Mesa, California. His first project was a racing sailboat for the yachtsman John Green, named Green Dolphin; small dinghies and the first fibreglass masts soon followed. The company moved within Costa Mesa in 1950 and on to Santa Ana in 1951, and by 1958 it ran branch plants in Nashville, Petersburg, Olympia and Sherman. The range went from car-top boats to seagoing cabin models, with lines such as Lido, Marathon, Citation and Seafair, and Tritt even built the G2 sports car with a fibreglass body. He left in 1960, and late in the sixties Glasspar passed to Larson, which kept the name until the mid seventies.
Our model records hold four entries, all motorboats and all from the brand's Larson years. The Glasspar G 3 is the smallest at 4.32 metres and is listed from 1970 to 1979. The V 165 measures 4.95 metres and runs from 1970 to 1978. The V 175 reaches 5.35 metres and appears twice, once ending in 1977 and once in 1978, most likely two versions of the same hull. The V points to the vee bottom, the number to the length in feet and inches. No line goes beyond 1979, so every Glasspar today is a classic of at least forty-five years.
Old fibreglass runabouts are tougher than they look, but age shows in predictable places. Soft spots in the floor and transom, often from rotten plywood coring under the laminate, are the first thing to check. Gelcoat crazing is common and mostly cosmetic. Original upholstery, windscreens and chrome trim are hard to find, which is why a complete boat is worth far more than a project. Many owners restore a period outboard to match the boat. The Glasspar Owners Association keeps the history of these boats alive, and its members are a good source when checking whether a boat is original.
