Gougeon; cover, cost and conditions
Gougeon Brothers is based in Bay City, Michigan. Meade, Jan and Joel Gougeon founded the company in 1969 and were among the people who brought epoxy into boatbuilding and boat repair, developing their own materials and processes along the way. For years the Bay City workshop turned out one-off racing sailboats and composite blades for wind turbines. When the wind turbine market collapsed in 1986, the brothers looked for a second line of work and tried something new for them: a production boat. Jan Gougeon drew a catamaran to a short brief. It had to be light, trailerable, fast and fun, with room for two or three people over a weekend. The slim, light hulls and the plain deckhouse make a Gougeon 32 easy to recognise.
Our model records hold exactly one design from the brand: the Gougeon 32 Katamaran, listed as a sailing catamaran of 9.56 metres. It appears with build years from 1990 to 1999, with no variant, no motorboat and no second line. Production does not reach into recent years, so every boat available today is second hand and carries a few decades of history. At just under ten metres the Gougeon 32 sits close to the limit of what a multihull can still take on the road, which is exactly what it was designed for. For such a small range the background is unusually well documented, since the yard itself published a great deal about its work with epoxy.
Owning a Gougeon 32 means looking after an epoxy composite structure. Check for moisture around deck fittings, chainplates and any later repairs, since water in the core is the real enemy of a light boat. The trailer deserves the same attention as the hulls: bearings, brakes, lights and the mechanism that brings the hulls together for the road. On a boat bought abroad, ask for the paperwork and the history of the rig. Many owners still race these cats in club events, so look for worn sails, tired rudder fittings and signs of hard landings on the beach.
