Heyday; cover, cost and conditions
Heyday began as a father and son project. John Dorton had spent years at the head of MasterCraft and then served as president of Bryant Boats; his son Ben Dorton was a former competitive wakeboarder. Their aim was an inboard tow boat for wakeboarding and wakesurfing that left out needless complexity and so opened the sport to more people. Early versions were called Wake Tractor, which explains the WT in every model name. In 2016 Bayliner, part of Brunswick, bought the Heyday and Wake Tractor names along with designs and tooling and moved production into its own plants. Ben Dorton joined Bayliner, while his father stayed on as an adviser.
Our model records list five designs, all motorboats between 5.94 and 7.65 metres. The WT-1 at 5.94 metres appears from 2013 and is listed until 2022, the WT-2 at 6.86 metres from 2014 to 2020. Also from 2014 come the WT 1 Side Console at 6.1 metres and the WT Surf, at 7.65 metres the longest boat of the brand. The WT-2 DC at 6.89 metres joined in 2016. Three lines reach into the most recent build years: the WT-2 DC, the WT 1 Side Console and the WT Surf. Every boat stays under eight metres and at a size that can be trailed to the next lake.
Wake boats work hard at low speed with heavy ballast, so the ballast system is the first thing to inspect on a used Heyday: pumps, hoses, through-hulls and any sign of water where it should not be. Check the tower mounts for cracks around the bolts, since the tower carries the tow rope load. Inboard engines in this class run many hours at part load; ask for the service record, look at the impeller and the gearbox oil and check the shaft seal. Upholstery and flooring take a beating from boards and wet feet. On the trailer, rollers, bunks, brakes and lights all need a look before a long tow.
