Heyland Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Heyland Marine is a family business at Bourne End Marina in Buckinghamshire, trading since 1976 and now run by the third generation. It builds and supplies small craft for inland and sheltered water: rowing boats, fishing boats, lake and pond boats, hire boats and one-off designs. Polyethylene and aluminium sit alongside traditional boatbuilding in its materials. Heyland boats are short and simple, many barely two metres long, small enough for a roof rack or a light trailer.
Our records list eight Heyland models, all motorboats: the Dingo, Tadpole and Pram plus the numbered 230, 250, 253, 315 and 350. Recorded build years run from 1986 to 1994; the Pram starts in 1987, the Dingo, Pram and Tadpole end in 1994 and the numbered boats in 1993. Lengths go from 1.9 metres for the Dingo and Tadpole to 3.5 metres for the Heyland 350, with the 230 and Pram at 2.29, the 250 at 2.5, the 253 at 2.53 and the 315 at 3.15 metres, so the number gives roughly the length in centimetres.
These are boats for ponds, lakes and quiet stretches of river, rowed or pushed along by a small outboard or electric motor. They store upside down on trestles or hang in a boathouse. Plastic and aluminium need little more than a wash, but oarlocks, transom fittings and drain plugs wear and are worth checking before the first outing of the year.
