HopYacht; cover, cost and conditions
HopYacht is based in Hout Bay near Cape Town in South Africa. The brand is the idea of local sailor Paul Tomes, who teamed up with Du Toit Yacht Design, where Anton du Toit drew the boat. The result is a compact cruising catamaran with no combustion engine on board. Two 6 kW electric pod drives from E-Propulsion push her along, cooking happens on an induction plate and an electric heater supplies hot water. The target crew is a couple or a young family heading for the Mediterranean or the Caribbean. Her beam is kept to 3.44 metres, narrow enough to fit a berth meant for a 36 to 38 foot monohull, and the hulls can be taken apart and shipped in two standard containers.
Our model records list one design, the HopYacht 30 sailing catamaran, with build years from 2018 to 2022 and a length of 9.35 metres. No other lines or sizes appear, and the entry does not reach the most recent build years. The rig is kept simple, with a furling genoa as the only headsail and the mast stepped well aft. Sail area is around 29.5 square metres and draught about 0.7 metres, shallow enough for many anchorages that deeper boats cannot reach. The builder also offered the boat on a shared ownership basis, with several couples splitting one yacht.
Life with an electric catamaran revolves around energy. A buyer should ask for the age and charge history of the battery bank, check the state of the charger and any solar panels, and see the pods run under load. Salt water and electrics need clean, dry connections, so look behind panels for corrosion. Because the hulls can be separated, the joints and fastenings between hulls and bridge deck deserve a careful inspection, especially on a boat that has been shipped. The shallow draught invites beaching in sandy bays, so inspect the keels and pod housings for scrapes. Ask how many days the boat has spent in charter.
