Jolly Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Every boat listed under Jolly Boats in our records is an inflatable, built in the 1980s and early 1990s. Three range names identify them, Jolly, Raider and Tropea, and the number in the name usually tells you the size. On the Raider 300 to 560 and the Jolly 300 to 560 it is the length in centimetres, so a Raider 465 is 4.65 metres long. The small Tropea 2,50 to 3,50 put the length in metres into the name, while the Tropea 400 to 460 switch back to centimetres. Only the Jolly 2 to Jolly 8 are simply numbered in sequence, from a 2.5 metre tender to a six metre boat.

Our model records hold 25 Jolly inflatables with build years from 1984 to 1993. They fall into five groups: seven numbered Jolly 2 to 8, five Jolly 300 to 560, five Raider models from 300 to 560, seven Tropea from 2,50 to 460 and a single Jolly Tropea 500. Lengths run from 2.5 to 6 metres. Twelve are shorter than four metres, eight measure between four and 4.65 metres and five reach five metres or more. Almost all lines end in 1991 or 1992; only the Raider 465 is recorded until 1993.

Boats this small rarely have a berth of their own. They ride on a trailer or in the boot of a car, go in at the ramp and come home again at night, and the smallest sizes serve as tenders on larger yachts. After thirty years and more, the tubes and seams are what decide a boat's condition: rinsing off salt, drying before storage and a dark, frost free place for the winter keep the fabric supple.
