Kennex Chantier; cover, cost and conditions
Kennex is the name of a family of cruising catamarans, often listed as Pro Kennex. The lines come from the design office of Van Peteghem and Lauriot Prevost, better known as VPLP. Hulls were built as a foam cored glassfibre sandwich laid up under vacuum, with no timber, plywood or balsa in the deck, hulls or bulkheads. The Kennex 380 is described as a French built catamaran for families who want to cruise offshore with confidence. The boats are noticeably wide for their length. A Pro Kennex 420 is essentially a 445 with shorter transoms, sharing moulds, interior and sail plan.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing catamarans with accommodation. The Kennex 380 measures 11.5 metres and is recorded with build years from 1985 to 1999. The Kennex 445 reaches 13.5 metres and appears from 1989 to 1998. Neither line reaches into the most recent build years, so both are found only second hand today. For more than a decade the two sizes were built side by side. Many of these boats have travelled far, and some Kennex 380s have crossed the Atlantic several times. The Kennex 420 belongs to the family as well, though our records do not list it separately.
A catamaran with ocean miles behind it needs a careful survey. Check the bridgedeck and the joints between the hulls and the crossbeam, where loads concentrate at sea. On a foam sandwich hull, a moisture meter and a tap test help find areas where the core has come away from the skins. Rudders, saildrives or shafts, and the trampoline fittings deserve close attention. The wide beam that makes these boats stable at sea also limits the marinas that can take them, so owners often anchor out or look for end berths.
