Madera Ribs; cover, cost and conditions
Madera builds rigid inflatables in the Netherlands, based at Rotterdam. The house does not make leisure boats but large working craft: fast transport boats for heavy cargo or many people, patrol boats, rescue boats and craft for public authorities and armed forces. You recognise them by the very tall multi chamber tube, the deep vee hull with its pronounced deadrise and the strictly functional layout: enclosed helm cabins, suspension seats and open deck space instead of upholstery. Many models are available with either an outboard or an inboard engine.
Our model records list 59 Madera models, all of them rigid inflatables. Build years start in 2003 and run into current production. Fifty nine series are recorded. The designation consists of the letters MR, the length in centimetres and the intended use: MR 800 and MR 900 as Cargo, MR 800 and MR 950 as Patrol, MR 800 and MR 1000 as Commando, MR 950 as Crew, MR 1000 as Rescue and as Tourist, and the MR 1010 as Interceptor. Several are also offered as Inboard. Lengths run from 8 to 22.8 metres, half the models between 10 and 14.4 metres.
What matters about these boats is the work they do rather than their size. A tube divided into several separate chambers is not a comfort feature: it is there so the boat keeps floating and keeps its shape after one chamber is lost, which is the assumption a patrol or rescue craft is built on. The same reasoning produces the suspension seats, since at speed in a seaway the crew takes more punishment than the hull.

As the Madera MR 800 Cargo, Madera MR 800 Cargo Inboard,
Madera MR 800 Commando Inboard by Madera Ribs and 45 more series are still in production,
parts are available and repair costs are predictable.
Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For the Madera MR 1250 Assault Outboard, Madera MR 1500 Beaching,
Madera MR 1500 Sleeper Cabin by Madera Ribs and 8 more series the market value and the replacement
cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Madera MR 800 Cargo, Madera MR 800 Cargo Inboard,
Madera MR 800 Commando Inboard by Madera Ribs and further series:
On an inflatable the cause decides, not the damage: a tear from impact is covered,
porous fabric after years in the sun is not.
The outboard belongs in the policy with its serial number.
