Mako; cover, cost and conditions
Mako is an American fishing boat brand from Miami. Robert Schwebke founded MAKO Marine in 1967. He was a marine surveyor who could not find an affordable boat that made a safe and practical fishing platform offshore. His first design was an open 19 footer with the steering console set in the middle, shown at the 1967 Miami Boat Show. That layout, the centre console, still defines the brand: you can walk all the way round the boat and follow a fish from bow to stern. Makos are easy to spot by the CC in the name, rod holders around the cockpit, a livewell aft and usually one or more outboards on the transom.
Our model records list 26 motorboats. Build years start in 2007, and 13 lines reach the latest build years. Lengths run from 4.6 metres for the Pro Skiff 15 CC to 12.5 metres for the 414 CC. The core is the centre consoles 184, 204, 212, 214, 234, 236, 264, 284, 334 and 414 CC. Alongside them come the Pro Skiff boats at 15, 16, 17 and 19 feet, the LTS 18 and 21 and the 19 CPX. The bay boats 1901 and 2201 as well as the 191 and 211 also came as Tunnel versions, with a recess aft that lets the engine sit higher. Twelve designs stay under six metres, three measure eight metres or more.
A fishing boat lives a hard life: salt, fish blood, bait and hooks everywhere. A thorough freshwater rinse of deck, livewell and engine after every trip is the most useful habit an owner can keep. Outboards on the bigger CC models are heavy and load the transom, so the bolts and the transom core deserve a check. Electronics at the console, from sounder to plotter, sit exposed to spray and sun, and covers for the console pay off. On the trailer, hubs and brakes need the same attention as the boat.
