Marvel Co.; cover, cost and conditions
Marvel is a Greek builder of rigid inflatable boats, founded and owned by Evangelos Karabetsos. The name became known beyond Greece through the Marvel 41, which he developed with the studio Nikos Manafis Design: a RIB of 12.52 metres with a beam of 3.45 metres, built in an armoured version to escort a larger yacht through Mediterranean waters. A passenger version with an enclosed deck and a guest tender were planned alongside it. Power comes either from twin inboards or twin outboards. Smaller Marvel boats are a familiar sight in Greek charter fleets, both on the islands and around Athens.
Our model records list eight Marvel designs, all rigid inflatables and all reaching into the latest build years. The Marvel 9.59 starts in 2016, the other seven in 2017. The names roughly follow the length in metres: the Marvel 5.05 measures 4.99 metres, the 6.90 is 6.99 metres and the 7.50 Open/Cabin 7.49 metres, either open or with a cabin. At around nine and a half metres sit the 9.59 and the 9.60, both 9.52 metres. Above them comes the 41 series in three versions: the Marvel 41 Armored and Marvel 41 S at 12.52 metres each and the Marvel 41 T at 11.99 metres. The range thus runs from a small day boat to a big RIB of over twelve metres.
Greek RIBs often lead a busy life. Some have worked in charter, ferrying guests to beaches and coves several times a day, so engine hours and service records count for more than the build year alone. Tubes are the first thing to inspect: seams, patches and the bond to the hull show how the boat has been treated, and long hours under strong sun take their toll on the fabric. On the larger boats, check the steering, the console and any cabin for water ingress. The smaller models travel well on a trailer, which makes them popular for island hopping and family days at sea.
