May-Craft; cover, cost and conditions
May-Craft, often spelled Maycraft, is a boatbuilder based in Four Oaks, North Carolina, and the yard says every boat is built in the state. Construction is all composite. The range falls into five families: shallow water skiffs, centre consoles, the classically styled Cape Classic line, Pilot House boats with an enclosed helm and open bay boats. Anglers are the people in mind, with a clear deck around the console and room to fish. The letters after the number tell you what you are looking at: CC means centre console, CCX marks the longer console boats, and Pilot or Pilothouse means a wheelhouse.
Our model records list 22 May-Craft designs, 19 motorboats and three motor yachts. Eleven carry the CC tag, three of them as CCX (2300, 2550 and 2700). Four belong to the Pilot family, three are skiffs and two are Cape Classics, the 20 and the 23, joined by the 25 Hancock Edition and the 26 Revenge. Twelve lines start with model year 2007, the 1900CC and 2000CC among them. Sixteen run into the latest model years, while six have ended, most recently the 23 CC in 2021. Lengths go from 5.1 metres for the 1700 CC to 8.23 metres, shared by the 2700 Pilothouse, 2700 Pilot XL and 2700CCX.
These are trailer boats at heart, so launching at a ramp is part of a normal day out and the trailer deserves the same care as the hull: rinse the brakes and bearings after salt water. On an open console boat the electronics and engine sit in plain view, which makes a lockable console and a fitted tarpaulin worth having at a public slipway. The Pilot models with their enclosed helm stretch the season into colder months and suit a marina berth, where the composite hull asks for little more than a wash, antifouling and a check of the through hulls each spring.
