Mitchell & Son; cover, cost and conditions
The name Mitchell & Son refers to R. Mitchell & Son, a boatbuilder in Newhaven on the south coast of England. Alan Hill designed the Sea Angler for the firm, and the boat was launched in 1969. Its round bilge semi-displacement hull has a fine entry and a strongly flared bow. Anglers and fishermen took to it quickly, and it soon found commercial work as well, including with the police. That is why the Sea Angler label was quietly dropped and the boat lived on as the Mitchell 31. In 1984 Hill set up Mitchell Mouldings Ltd in Burnham on Crouch, bought the moulds, which by then were on the Isle of Wight, and put a MK2 into production in 1986. As the MK3 the design was still being built some forty years after it first appeared.
Our model records hold two Newhaven designs: the Sea Angler 23, a motorboat of 6.9 metres, and the Sea Angler 31, listed as a motor yacht of 9.3 metres. Both carry build years from 1970 to 1977, and neither runs on into recent production. Even the youngest of these boats are close to fifty years old. The two sizes are 2.4 metres apart. Later versions of the 31 built in Burnham on Crouch belong to Mitchell Mouldings and are not listed under this name. A Sea Angler bought today has almost always passed through several owners, and many have had at least one new engine.
The hull is the reason people still seek these boats out. The fine entry and flared bow handle a short sea well, though the ride can be wet, which is why later boats gained heavy spray rails. On an older example the first things to check are the deck to hull joint, the transom around the engine mounts and the condition of the wheelhouse windows and their seals. Many boats were worked hard, so look for patched gelcoat around the fishing cockpit and wear on the rubbing strakes. Engine hours, shaft and stern gear deserve a close look before purchase, and a recent survey is worth having. Owners use them for day trips to wrecks and reefs, coastal cruising and simple pottering with a rod over the side.
