Mussini Giorgio Srl is a small yard in Portofino on the Ligurian Riviera. Giorgio Mussini started out in 1949 in the fishing village itself, and his son Gaetano joined him in the eighties. That decade produced the boat that carries the village name, the Utility Portofino, which the yard describes as its first boat built entirely by hand in wood. The Corvetta 24 came later and is presented as the next step on from the Utility. It is a modern take on the gozzo, the traditional Ligurian open boat, with a glassfibre hull, mahogany joinery and a central helm. The giveaways are the gozzo profile and a great deal of varnished wood on deck and around the wheel.

Varnished mahogany is beautiful and unforgiving. It wants sanding and fresh coats on a regular rhythm, and any crack in the finish lets water into the grain, so a buyer should look closely at edges, cleats and the area around the helm. On a glassfibre Corvetta the hull itself is less demanding, but the wooden trim still asks for the same attention. These boats are made for short hops along a rocky coast, for swimming stops in small bays and for runs between harbour and anchorage. Many are lifted out and stored ashore, so the cradle and the lifting points deserve a look too.
