Nautica Esposito is a yard in Torre del Greco on the Bay of Naples. Stanislao Esposito founded it in 1968; it began with work boats and later turned to leisure boats in the style of the Sorrento gozzo, the traditional craft of the coast around Sorrento and Amalfi with its high rounded bow, full hull and plenty of wood on deck. The yard pairs glass fibre hulls with solid teak walkways and mahogany rubbing strakes and trim. Each boat carries the Positano name and a figure close to its length in feet.
Our records list ten models, all from the Positano range and all motorboats. They run from the 7 metre Positano 23 to the three 11.5 metre versions of the Positano 38. Five carry the Cabin label (28 Cabin, 28 Cabin Sport, 32 Cabin, 38 Cabin and 38 Cabin SD) and two the Open label (28 Open and 38 Open). The Positano 27 is the earliest, from 2004, five more follow in 2006, the 23 and 38 Cabin SD in 2011 and the 32 Cabin and 38 Open in 2017. All ten lines run into the latest build years.
A Positano is a coastal day boat, kept on a mooring or a marina berth and taken out to swimming coves and harbour towns. Teak decks want a gentle wash with salt water rather than harsh cleaners, and the mahogany trim needs fresh varnish every season or two. Protecting the woodwork with a tarpaulin in the off season saves a lot of sanding in spring.
