O-Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

O-Yachts (Class 4 Extended) builds its catamarans at Engure, a village on the Latvian shore of the Baltic, about an hour's drive from Riga. The company was set up in 2012 with export markets in mind from the start. Its larger boat, the Class 6, was shaped around a structural idea the yard calls the spine concept, developed by the multihull sailor Laurent Bourgnon. The styling came from the yard's own engineering team working with the car designer Andrei Trofimchouk, while Doug Schickler and Davide Tagliapietra handled the naval architecture. The smaller sister, the Class 4, was drawn by Érik Lerouge and built in Latvia under the direction of Dan Levy. Both are cruising catamarans, and the Class 6 also exists as a power version.

Our model records hold five designs: four sailing catamarans and one power catamaran. The story starts in 2014 with the Class 4, the Class 6 and the Class 4 Extra Long, followed by the Class 4 Extended in 2015 and the Class 6 Power in 2017. The two stretched versions of the Class 4 are listed until 2019, while the other three run into the most recent build years. The Class 4 measures 13.99 metres, the Extended 15.29 and the Extra Long 16.16. At the top sit the Class 6 at 18.41 metres and the Class 6 Power at 19.2 metres, the longest boat in the range. Four of the five designs exceed 15 metres.

Catamarans of this size are built for long passages, and their care follows from that. Two hulls mean two sets of rudders, saildrives or shafts, through-hulls and bilges to check, and the underside of the bridgedeck deserves a look for slamming marks after rough crossings. On the sailing versions the chainplates, the forestay attachment and the standing rigging are worth inspecting at every survey. When looking at a used Class 4, it helps to confirm which of the three lengths the hull actually has, because the variants look much alike from the pontoon. On the Class 6 Power, engine hours and the service history carry more weight than on the sailing sisters.

What this means for the cover

As the O-Yachts Class 4, O-Yachts Class 6 and O-Yachts Class 6 Power by O-Yachts series are still

in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Class 4 Extended and Class 4 Extra Long by O-Yachts series the market value and the

replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the O-Yachts Class 4, O-Yachts Class 6, O-Yachts Class 6 Power by O-Yachts and further series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
