Overmarine is the yard behind the Mangusta yachts. The Balducci family founded it in 1985 in Viareggio on the Tuscan coast, one of the old centres of Italian yacht building, and it runs further yards in Pisa and Massa. Mangusta made its name with large open sport yachts that are fast and still offer plenty of space: long, low lines, a wide aft deck and a helm without a flybridge above. Long range displacement yachts came later.
Our model records list 30 motor yachts, all of them named Mangusta, from 22 to 65 metres. Build years start in 1989, and nine lines reach into the latest build years. The older generation carries its length in feet in the name, from the Mangusta 72 Open at 22 metres via the 80, 92, 105, 108 and 130 to the 165E at almost 50 metres. From 2013 three lines followed: Gran Sport at 33, 45, 50 and 54 metres, Oceano from 43 to 60 metres for long passages, and Maxi Open with the 104 Sport, 132E, 312 Open and the 215 Open, at 65 metres the longest ship in our records.
A Mangusta is run by a professional crew, and much of what keeps it in good shape is their routine: engine room logs, inspections of propellers or jet drives, regular haul outs for the antifouling. The fast Open models carry very large engines and work their drive trains hard, so service intervals deserve strict attention. On the Oceano yachts the long range systems, generators and stabilisers are where a survey spends most of its time. Older yachts from the nineties are often refitted, and a good refit record adds a lot to their value.
