Pacemaker Yacht Co.; cover, cost and conditions

Pacemaker was an American yard in southern New Jersey. John Leek senior founded it in early 1949 together with his brother at Lower Bank on the Mullica River, after selling his share of a neighbouring yard. Building was in timber at first and later, as everywhere, in fibreglass. In the 1960s that neighbouring yard came under the same roof. Several well known boatbuilders worked within a few kilometres of each other there, and the area is still regarded as a cradle of American sport boat building. You recognise the yachts by the wide boxy cabin, the large open aft deck and the high straight topsides.

Our model records list 38 Pacemaker models, all of them motor yachts. Recorded build years run from 1964 to 2002. Thirty eight series are recorded: the Pacemaker 26, 30, 32, 33, 36, 40, 46, 47, 55, 60 and 65; the special versions EC 26, CS 32, DC 38 and SF 48; a houseboat; and the Alglas models in 25, 26, 28, 31, 33 and 38. The number gives the approximate length in feet, so a Pacemaker 40 measures around twelve metres. Lengths run from 7.7 to 19.6 metres, half the models between 9.2 and 12.8 metres.

These are all old yachts now, and on the earliest ones the material is timber rather than fibreglass. Planking, frames and deck covering age slowly and quietly, which is exactly what separates that kind of wear from an event, and it is why a survey on a boat of this age tells more than any year of build can.
