Worth knowing

Pacific Shipyards; cover, cost and conditions

Pacific Shipyards is a Dutch yard in Waspik, in the province of North Brabant. Founded in 1984, it has been building steel motor yachts ever since, each one fitted out to the owner's brief. Designers, engineers and shipwrights work under one roof, and the yard quotes a range of roughly 40 to 85 feet. The family names are the easiest way to tell the boats apart: Allure, Pearl, P and S, each followed by a three digit number that hints at the length in decimetres. A Pearl 150 is just over 15 metres long, a P 240 almost 25.

Our model records list 35 designs, every one of them a motor yacht. The Allure is the largest group with ten versions, some marked SH and some WS, followed by nine Pearl, eight P and six S models. The oldest entry is the Pacific Royal 45 at 14.5 metres, recorded from 1992 to 1998. The Pearl starts in 2003, the other ranges between 2007 and 2009, and nearly every entry ends with the 2017 build year, so none of the lines reaches the most recent years in our records. Thirty four of the 35 designs measure 15 metres or more and 14 reach at least 20 metres. The largest on the list is the Pacific P 240 at 24.8 metres.

A steel yacht of this size rewards steady maintenance. The hull wants regular checks of its coating and of the sacrificial anodes, and any rust weeping from welds or deck fittings deserves attention early. Inside, these boats carry a lot of systems, from the generator to navigation electronics and domestic equipment, and each of them ages at its own pace. Before buying a used Pacific from the nineties or the 2000s, a survey with ultrasonic thickness readings of the hull plating is the sensible starting point, together with the service history of the engines. Yachts of this kind often spend long seasons on inland waters and along the coast, and a well documented maintenance file tells a buyer more than the year on the builder's plate.

What this means for the cover

For the Pacific Allure 150, Pacific Allure 160,

Pacific Allure 170 by Pacific Shipyards and 31 more series the market value and the replacement

cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Pacific Royal 45 by Pacific Shipyards series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Pacific Allure 150, Pacific Allure 160,

Pacific Allure 170 by Pacific Shipyards and further series:

On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.

Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
