Worth knowing
Palm Beach Motor yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Palm Beach Motor Yachts is an Australian yard founded in the mid 1990s by Mark Richards at Palm Beach, on Sydney's Northern Beaches, and now based at Berkeley Vale in New South Wales. Its motor yachts are built as foam-cored composite hulls with vinylester resin and finished with plenty of teak. You know one by the PB prefix in front of the model number, while a second line adds a GT tag. The yard puts its range at 14 to 23 metres, which is exactly the span our records show.
Our records list 13 Palm Beach models, all motor yachts. Two spellings mark the generations. Four older lines are written without a space: the PB50 from 1998 to 2004, the PB55 and PB45 up to 2015 and the PB65 up to 2020. Nine newer lines with a space run into the latest build years: PB 42, 45, 50, 52, 55, 65 and 70 plus the PB GT 50 and PB GT 60. Lengths go from the 14.38 metre PB 42 to the 22.97 metre PB 70.
Yachts of 14 to 23 metres are berth boats. They spend the season in a marina, run coastal passages and come out of the water for antifouling and running gear checks. Teak decks want regular cleaning and the occasional recaulking, and the twin diesels on the larger models reward a skipper who keeps the service log tidy. Shore power, a good berth and a crew that knows the boat make more difference here than raw speed.
