Patrone Moreno; cover, cost and conditions
Patrone Moreno is a yard on the Ligurian Riviera, close to the Albenga exit of the coastal motorway. It was founded in 1922 by the boatbuilder Giuseppe Patrone and taken over by the Moreno family in 1984. Over the decades it has built gozzi, tenders, sailing boats, motor yachts and working boats, in wood as well as in glassfibre. A Patrone is easy to place: it starts from the gozzo, the Ligurian fishing boat with a high, rounded bow and a beamy hull, and carries those lines into boats with a cabin, a flybridge or an open cockpit. Small classic gozzi such as the Sarago are still part of the range.
Our model records list ten designs: five motor yachts, four motorboats and a Sarago Xl that is classed as a small sailing boat. Build years run from 2003 to 2018, and no line reaches into recent production. The Patrone 20 Cabinato, 23 Convertible, 33 Convertible and 33 Fly all start in 2003. The 25 Fly, 30 Convertible and the Sarago Xl join in 2005, followed in 2013 by the Patrone 20 Aguglia Imperiale, the 27 Open Special and the 42 Special. The Patrone 33 Convertible has the longest run, from 2003 to 2018. Lengths range from 4.3 metres for the Sarago Xl to 13.7 metres for the Patrone 42 Special.
Gozzi often carry a lot of varnished wood, so the state of the brightwork, the rubbing strakes and the teak deck says much about how a boat has been kept. On a secondhand Patrone it is worth checking the shaft, the stern gear and the engine hours, since many of these boats spend long summer days at low speed along the coast. The broad hull makes them stable at anchor in small Ligurian bays, and the convertible versions with their folding tops are used for day trips as much as for short cruises. A clear service history and photos of the hull out of the water help a buyer judge the boat.
