Pearl Motor Yachts Limited; cover, cost and conditions
Pearl Motor Yachts is a British brand with its head office in Stratford-upon-Avon. It began with Iain Smallridge, a former yacht captain who in the mid-nineties fitted out a set of moulds for a 50-foot cruiser for a private owner and then bought the assets of a defunct boat company. In 1998 he started out together with businessman John Yarnold, and Pearl made its debut at that year's Southampton Boat Show with aft cabin yachts of 41 and 45 feet. In 2001 Smallridge sold his stake to entrepreneur Tony Whittaker. According to the boating press, moulds, lamination and early engineering are done in Asia, with the final fit-out in England, more recently in Portsmouth Harbour. Bill Dixon drew the Pearl 75, with a notably beamy hull for its length.
Our model records hold 13 entries, all motor yachts between 15 and 29.22 metres. The earliest is the Pearl 55 Sport from 2000, followed by the Pearl 60, Pearl 50 and Pearl 52 Sport in 2003 and 2004. The Pearl 62 and Pearl 82 each appear twice, with slightly different build years. Five entries run into the most recent build years: one of the two Pearl 62 listings, the Pearl 72, both Pearl 82 listings and the Pearl 95, built since 2012 and at 29.22 metres the largest design. The Pearl 65, 75 and 80 ran until 2021, 2018 and 2024. Nine of the 13 entries measure 18 metres or more, and the Pearl 50 at 15 metres is the smallest.
A yacht of this size is a small household afloat, and buying one used means looking well beyond the hull. Engine room, generators, air conditioning and the pod or shaft drives deserve a specialist survey, and the service records should be complete. On the larger Pearls the crew areas, tender garage and davits tell a lot about how the boat was run. If the yacht has moved between the Channel and the Mediterranean, check how the boat has been kept over the winter and whether the electrics suit the berth you have in mind. Interior finishes age at different speeds, so a close look at soft furnishings, joinery and headliners pays off.
