Pearson Marine Group; cover, cost and conditions

The True North name leads back to a family that appears early in American glassfibre boatbuilding. Everett and Clinton Pearson founded Pearson Yachts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, in 1956, one of the first companies to build sailing boats in glassfibre. Everett Pearson later founded TPI Composites, and from that business came US Watercraft in Warren, Rhode Island, where the True North 38 was built. Its hull was made with SCRIMP, a resin infusion process in which a vacuum draws the resin into the glass cloth. American reviewers called the 38 a sport utility boat because of its space and versatility. Further sizes followed under the name True North by Pearson Yachts, from the smaller 34 up to the 50.

Our model records list five designs, all classed as motor yachts. The True North 38 is the earliest entry, from 1999, and at 12.65 metres sits in the middle of the range. The True North 34 at 10.9 metres and the True North 47 at 15.19 metres join in 2005, the 34 Outboard Express in 2011 and the True North 50 at 15.39 metres in 2012. The Outboard Express is the shortest boat at 10.6 metres. The 47 ends in 2013 and the other four lines are listed until 2018. None reaches the most recent build years, so every True North on the market today is a used boat.

A True North of this age is bought on its history. Resin infusion tends to give an even laminate, but a survey should still sound the hull and deck for moisture around fittings and hatches. Inboard versions call for engine hours, oil analyses and the condition of shafts, seals and exhaust elbows. On the 34 Outboard Express the transom and the engine mounts carry the load of the outboards and deserve close attention. Teak, canvas and the electrical system, which tends to grow with every owner, are worth checking too. Paperwork for a boat bought in the United States should show the hull identification number clearly.
