Piper Boats works from Biddulph near Stoke-on-Trent, a long way from the sea and right in the middle of the English canal network. By its own account the business has been going since 1969. It builds steel boats modelled on the Dutch barges, the shallow draught cargo vessels that once worked the rivers and canals of the Netherlands and France. The range comes in three classes: the Luxemotor boats with their long foredeck, the Motor Class and the Nivernais line, named after the French canal. A Piper shows its origins in the lines of the old barges and in a hull of shipbuilding steel, meant for canals, rivers, lakes, estuaries and even a sea crossing.
Our model records list one Piper design, the Piper 49M motor yacht from the Motor Class. It measures 14.95 metres, fifteen in round figures, and appears for the build years 2011 to 2022, so the entry stops short of recent years, although the yard still offers the 49M alongside the Luxemotor sizes 49L to 65L, the Motor Class 60M and 65M and the Nivernais 55N and 57N. A steel barge lives or dies by its paint. Look at the waterline, the base plate and the areas round the rubbing strakes, and ask for a recent hull survey with ultrasonic thickness readings. Sacrificial anodes need regular renewal, especially in brackish estuaries. Inside, check for condensation behind the lining, because a steel hull sweats if insulation is poor. Many owners live aboard for months, so heating, water tanks, electrics and the engine room deserve as much attention as the hull. In locks and along quay walls the strakes take the knocks, which is exactly what they are for.
