Powerquest Boats built fast sport boats in Holland, Michigan, near the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Todd Kamps and Kevin Hirdes, who first met water skiing, founded the company in 1983, and it has carried the PowerQuest Boats name since 1992. Its fibreglass boats used stepped hulls and were built for speed. The names give them away: a number close to the length in feet plus a combative nickname such as Raizor, Stryker, Legend, Silencer, Revenge, Vyper or Avenger. The yard closed in 2005, came back, and was last run by PQ Marine Holdings until 2011.
Our model records hold ten Powerquest designs: one motorboat, the 6.8 metre 22 Raizor, and nine motor yachts. The 340 Vyper is listed from 1999, the others from 2002, and every line ends with build year 2012. Four models sit between 6.8 and 7.8 metres (22 Raizor, 237 Stryker SX, 260 Legend SLS and SX), four between 8.4 and 9.73 metres (280 Silencer, 280 SC, 300 Revenge, 320 SC). The 10.6 metre 340 Vyper and the 11.6 metre 380 Avenger close the range.
These are boats for flat water days and quick runs, whether on the Great Lakes or a European lake. The smaller ones up to 7.8 metres live on a trailer and go in at the ramp; the 340 and 380 usually keep a berth. High output engines and stern drives deserve a careful check after every season, and a stepped hull should be inspected for cracks around the steps before the first fast run of the year.
