Powles; cover, cost and conditions

Powles (Powles Super 38) is a Norfolk Broads name. Jack Powles of Wroxham began building sailing craft early in the twentieth century, among them classic wooden classes such as the Star and the Foam. In the mid-1960s the yard moved over to glassfibre, and through the seventies and early eighties its output was dominated by motor cruisers, sold as numbered models alongside lines such as the Star, Wanderbird and Westward. In the early 1990s the business became JPC Ltd. and stopped building boats. Many Powles cruisers have since drifted to other waterways, though a few still lie on the Broads.

Our model records list twelve designs, every one of them a motor yacht. The oldest is the Powles (Powles Super 38) 37 of 1967, followed by the 45 in 1968, the 38 in 1970 and the 36 in 1972. The largest arrived in the mid-seventies: the Powles 53 from 1973 and the 53 MY from 1974, at 16.15 metres the longest of all. The Powles 33 and 50 were the last newcomers in 1979. Four designs share a length of 11.58 metres: the 36+2, 38, 38 MY and Super 38. Seven stay under twelve metres and three exceed 15 metres. None runs past 1986, so the youngest hulls are around forty years old.

With a forty-year-old cruiser the hull is rarely the problem; the systems around it usually are. Original wiring, fuel tanks and seacocks deserve close attention, and many boats will have had their engines replaced at least once. Window seals and deck fittings on older glassfibre boats can let water into the core or the interior, so damp patches and soft spots on deck are worth tracing. Records of past refits help separate a cherished boat from a tired one. Inland cruising on rivers and broads is gentle on a hull, while time spent at sea leaves more traces.
