Rafnar Maritime; cover, cost and conditions
Rafnar Maritime is an Icelandic company with its head office in Reykjavík. It was founded in 2005 to develop the ÖK hull, a design in which hull and keel are treated as one. The hull was invented by the Icelandic inventor Össur Kristinsson, whose initials it carries, and its purpose is to reduce slamming in waves and give a calmer ride in a seaway. Production now takes place at sites in Greece, Turkey and the United States. The range is split into two families. Professional boats serve coastguards and security services, while Leisure boats are meant for private owners, as tenders to larger yachts or for day trips. If you want to recognise a Rafnar, look below the waterline: the hull is what this brand has been about from the very start.
Our model records hold one design from the brand, the Rafnar 1200 Targa. It is listed as a RIB, a rigid inflatable, measures twelve metres and covers the build years 2019 to 2023. The figure in the name is the length in centimetres, and the builder's website shows further sizes of 850, 900, 1100, 1500 and 2000. Targa is one of several versions, alongside Open, Cabin, T-top and Cross. On the 1200 Targa the ÖK hull carries a cabin with room for up to eight people. None of our entries reaches into the most recent build years, and every boat on record is less than ten years old. For a RIB the 1200 Targa is large: at twelve metres it stands well above the inflatables usually seen along a pontoon.
A twelve metre RIB combines two kinds of upkeep. The tubes want protection from sun and chafe, a regular check of valves and seams and a close look where they are bonded to the hull. The hull and the engines need the routine of any fast motorboat, with service records that show regular oil changes and impeller replacements. Boats of this size often work as tenders or day boats in open water, so they run up many engine hours in a short time. When buying a used one, ask for the engine hours and the service history, inspect the tubes for repairs, check the electronics and the cabin for water ingress, and make sure the keel area of the hull shows no signs of hard impacts.
