Rhapsody; cover, cost and conditions
Rhapsody yachts trace back to the Swedish designer Göran Dahlström. At his own yard in Karlshamn, in the south of Sweden, sailing yachts of various sizes were built through the eighties and the early nineties. Dahlström is known for cruising designs that go well to windward, and he took care that materials and workmanship suited the purpose of the boat down to the last detail. He described his designs in a book, the 43 in depth with sketches and calculations. The aim was a slender, strong and torsionally stiff hull for open water. On the 43 in Royal trim the mainsail measures 44 square metres and the jib 45, a plan meant to be handled single-handed or by a small crew.
Our model records list three designs, all sailing yachts and all carrying the CVC suffix: the Rhapsody 34 CVC at 10.4 metres, the 40 CVC at 11.98 metres and the 43 CVC at 13.1 metres. The 34 and 40 are listed from 1986 to 1994, the 43 from 1986 to 1993. The whole range therefore sits within the years Dahlström was building in Karlshamn. No line reaches into recent build years, so every Rhapsody on the market today is a used yacht with three decades or more behind it. None of the designs is shorter than ten metres; the brand stays firmly in offshore cruising territory.
A yacht of this age rewards a careful survey. Standing rigging that has not been replaced in a long time should be renewed before any serious passage, and chainplates deserve a close look where they pass through the deck. On older GRP hulls of the period, a moisture reading below the waterline and a check of the keel bolts are standard. Teak decks, where fitted, are worth inspecting for loose plugs and worn caulking. Engines from the late eighties have often been replaced, so the paperwork for a repower tells a lot about how the boat has been looked after. Sails of 44 square metres and more are a real cost item, so their age matters too.
