Rival Bowman Yachts Ltd; cover, cost and conditions

Rival Bowman Yachts brings together two British names. The Rival line came from the designer Peter Brett; the Rival 38 was his fifth Rival design, built by Rival/Southern Boatbuilding and Marine Construction, and on it Brett moved to fuller hull ends to make room for an aft cabin. The later Bowman 40 was drawn by Chuck Paine, with a solid glassfibre hull, a cored deck, a moderate fin keel and a skeg-hung rudder, and it was also built as a cutter. It shares only its name with the earlier Laurent Giles design. The moulds of Stephen Jones's Starlight 39, first built by Sadler, also passed to Rival Bowman; its hull has a double skin with a full internal moulding bonded in. All the lines are laid out as cruising yachts.

Our model records list eleven sailing yachts built between 1967 and 2005, spread over four names: four Bowman and four Rival designs, two Starlights and one Sadler 34. The oldest entry is the Bowman 36 from 1967, followed by the Rival 32 from 1969, the Rival 41 and Rival 38 in the early seventies and the Rival 36 in 1978. The Bowman 40, 45 and 42 arrive from 1984, 1992 and 1994, the Starlight 39 from 1987, the Sadler 34 from 1991 and the Starlight 35 from 1993. Lengths run from 9.75 metres for the Rival 32 to 13.78 metres for the Bowman 45, and five designs measure more than twelve metres. No line reaches the recent build years; five end in 2005, among them the three later Bowman models.

Yachts of this kind were built for long service, but age still leaves its marks. On a Rival or Bowman, check the chainplates and their bonding, the rudder and skeg bearings, and the keel bolts. Engines from the eighties and nineties may be due for replacement, and the age of the standing rigging should be documented. The double-skin hull of the Starlight is stiff and quiet, yet water trapped between the skins is worth ruling out with a moisture meter. Ask for the refit history as well: on a cruising yacht of this age it tells more than the build year, and a well kept example is ready for long passages.
