RM Fora Marine; cover, cost and conditions
RM Yachts builds in La Rochelle on the French Atlantic coast, with roots in Fora Marine from the 1980s. Since 1995 the designs have come from Marc Lombard's office; Lombard learned plywood-epoxy building in Maine and was among the first to bring it to France. Hulls are made from okoumé marine plywood fully sealed in epoxy, a galvanised steel frame inside takes the loads, and the deck is usually glassfibre sandwich. An RM is easy to spot: a multi-chine hull carrying its beam well aft, painted topsides instead of gelcoat and twin rudders as standard, with a twin keel option for tidal waters. The yard now belongs to the Grand Large Yachting group.
Our model records list eleven sailing yachts built from 2007 onwards. Ten carry the RM name, and one Pogo 10.50 of 10.5 metres is filed under the yard for 2009 to 2015. The oldest entry is the RM 1350 from 2007, followed in 2008 by the RM 1060 and RM 1260, in 2010 by the RM 890 and RM 1360, and later by the RM 1070, RM 1270, RM 970, RM 1370 and, in 2016, the RM 1180. Five designs run into the most recent build years: RM 890, RM 970, RM 1070, RM 1180 and RM 1370. The other RM lines end between 2016 and 2020. Lengths range from 8.9 metres for the RM 890 to 14.74 metres for the RM 1370, and seven of the eleven yachts measure more than eleven metres.
Plywood-epoxy lasts well as long as the seal stays intact, so a used RM deserves a close look wherever the epoxy skin may have been broken: around deck fittings, at through-hull openings, in the keel area and at any repaired knocks. Moisture readings and a surveyor familiar with wood-epoxy construction help here. Painted hulls need repainting from time to time, which is routine upkeep rather than a defect. Twin rudders mean two sets of bearings and linkages to check, and on twin keel boats the keel roots should be inspected after years of drying out. The wide stern gives generous space in the cockpit.
