Robertsons; cover, cost and conditions
Alexander Robertson & Sons was a boatyard at Sandbank in Argyll, on the Clyde on Scotland's west coast. Alexander Robertson, a shipwright of 25, started repairing boats there in 1876, first in partnership with Daniel Kerr and later on his own. Over the decades Sandbank turned out wooden yachts, among them racing yachts to designs by William Fife III, George Lennox Watson and Alfred Mylne, the America's Cup challengers Sceptre of 1958 and Sovereign of 1963, Fairmile motor launches during the Second World War and lifeboats for the RNLI. The family sold the business in 1965. From then on the yard fitted out glassfibre boats such as the Piper, the Etchells and Ohlson designs, until it closed in 1980 after 104 years.
Our model records hold one design under Robertsons: the Piper One Design, listed as a sailing boat of 7.44 metres with build years from 1963 to 1984. Nothing reaches into the most recent build years. David Boyd drew the Piper at Sandbank, in 1965 and 1966 according to the class history, deriving it from Sovereign, which he had also designed and Robertson had built. The idea was a one-design class for racing on the Clyde. Hulls come from moulds taken off Sandpiper, and the first 14 hulls and decks were laid up by Marine Plastics in Grimsby before being fitted out and rigged in Scotland. Our records start in 1963 while the design is dated 1965 and 1966, so the paperwork of an individual boat deserves a careful read.
Every Piper afloat today has several decades behind it. Glassfibre of that age is usually sound, but it is worth checking the keel bolts and the area around the keel root, the chainplates and the deck fittings for movement or weeping. One-design boats are often raced hard, so a boat with a long club history may have had a few bumps along the gunwale and new sails over the years. The class association and old regatta results can help trace a hull's past. Many owners keep their Piper on a mooring through the season and lift it out in autumn, which makes a careful look at the cradle supports and the hull bottom part of every haul-out.
