Worth knowing
Russel Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Russel Marine, usually spelt Russell Marine in English sources, was a yard in Essex, England. It made its name with small glassfibre cruising yachts. The best known is the Vivacity 20, drawn by Peter Stevenson and Des Pollard as a small cruiser racer and developed as a stretched version of the Alacrity, an even smaller cabin yacht. Boats left the yard ready to sail or as kits for home completion.
Six models appear in our records, all small sailing boats. Four carry the Vivacity name: the 6.1 metre Vivacity 20, recorded from 1957 to 1973, the plain Vivacity, also 6.1 metres (1965 to 1981), the 6.5 metre Vivacity 650 (1968 to 1981) and the 7.2 metre Vivacity 24 (1967 to 1982). They are joined by the 5.7 metre Alacrity (1965 to 1979) and the 6.86 metre Islander (1966 to 1975). Lengths span 5.7 to 7.2 metres and build years 1957 to 1982.
A Russel Marine boat is now more than forty years old and often lovingly kept. Hull to deck joints, keel bolts and chainplates are worth a look, and kit built boats vary with the skill of their first owner. They tow easily, and a dry winter ashore suits the old glassfibre and the wooden trim.
