Sabre comes from Raymond in the state of Maine. Roger Hewson founded the yard in 1970 after working in his family's construction business. The location is unusual: Raymond lies inland, some 25 miles from Casco Bay, because his wife's family owned land there. It all began with a 28 foot sailing yacht. In 1989 the Sabre 36 Fast Trawler became the first motor yacht, later sold under the Sabreline name. The powerboats follow the Downeast style of New England, rooted in the lobster boats of Maine, with plenty of wood inside.

Build years start in 1989, and seven lines reach into the latest build years: the 38 Express, 42 Express, 42 Fly Bridge, the 45, 48 and 58 Salon Express and the 48 Fly Bridge Sedan. Lengths run from 10.4 metres for the Sabreline 36 Express Mark II to 24.6 metres for the 66 Salon Express. Twenty two designs measure twelve metres or more. The Sabreline range from 34 to 47 ran from 1993 to 2012. The sailing yachts carry three digit names, the Sabre 362, 386, 402, 426, 452 and 456, plus the Sabre Spirit at 11.2 metres.

A Sabre is a coastal cruiser made for long weekends and longer passages, often with twin diesels on shafts. Their joinery is a large part of their appeal, and keeping the varnish and the teak in good order is what makes an older Sabre look young. Engines, shaft seals and the generator are the main points of a survey. Some Sabres reach Europe second hand from the United States, so the electrical system may still run on American standards and needs a look before it meets European shore power.
