Worth knowing
Salterns Boats Ltd; cover, cost and conditions
Salterns Boats Ltd will always be linked with the Memory 19, a small gaff cutter that Tony Robinson drew after the fishing boats of the English east coast, with the Brightlingsea smacks as the usual reference. Salterns built it in glassfibre from the mid seventies, which made it one of the first traditionally rigged trailer sailers in that material. A Memory is easy to pick out: gaff rig, short coachroof, a big cockpit and two berths below. The Wagtail came later, a clinker dinghy of twelve and a half feet, built in Bursledon and later in Oxford according to a spar maker, and gaff rigged as well.
Our model records list two designs, both entered as sailing boats. The Memory 19 carries build years from 1977 to 2006 and is listed at 7.6 metres. The Wagtail follows with 2001 to 2007 and 3.81 metres. Neither line reaches into the most recent build years, so both are second-hand boats today. Almost three decades of production on the Memory mean that very early hulls and fairly young ones sell side by side under the same name.
A gaffer wants attention aloft. The gaff jaws, the halyards and the lacing of the mainsail wear where they rub, and wooden spars need their varnish kept up. On an older Memory it is worth checking the chainplates, the rudder fittings and the trailer as carefully as the hull. The Wagtail is light and forgiving, a dinghy for quiet water and family days, and its clinker look hides a modern build. Both boats spend much of their lives on a trailer, so bearings, lights and the winch matter.
