Worth knowing
Salthouse Boatbuilders Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Salthouse Boatbuilders is a family business from Greenhithe on the edge of Auckland. John Salthouse started the yard in 1956 building in wood. Over time it moved to glassfibre and composite construction and became known above all for racing yachts: Elliott 50s, Transpac 52s and the Kerr 46 Tonnere came out of the shed, and in 2010 a TP52 for the British TEAMORIGIN campaign. In the second generation the brothers Greg and Chris "Curly" Salthouse ran the yard. A chapter of its own is the Catalyst 45, a multihull support boat capable of 30 to 40 knots, built to keep pace with Emirates Team New Zealand's foiling catamarans at the 2013 America's Cup.
Our model records list five Salthouse designs, and the mix alone shows how the yard works: three sailing yachts, one boat in the rigid inflatable category and one motor yacht. The Transpac 52 is recorded from 1998 to 2011, the Elliott 52 from 2003 to 2018 and the Elliott 35 from 2012 to 2018. The Catalyst 45 and the Salthouse Southstar 37 both begin in 2012 and run into the most recent build years. Lengths range from 10.65 metres for the Elliott 35 to 15.85 metres for the Transpac 52 and the Elliott 52. The Catalyst 45 measures 14 metres, the Southstar 37 11.3 metres.
A grand prix yacht that has been raced hard needs a different inspection from a cruiser. Composite hulls should be checked for delamination and impact damage, ideally with ultrasound or thermal imaging. Keel attachment, rudder bearings and the mast step take enormous loads on a TP52, and carbon spars want a close look at fittings and hounds. Sails and electronics are often worth a large share of the boat. With a fast support boat like the Catalyst 45, engine hours and the condition of the drive train matter most, along with the hull bottom after years of high-speed running.

series: On an inflatable the cause decides, not the damage: a tear from impact is covered,
porous fabric after years in the sun is not.
The outboard belongs in the policy with its serial number.
For the Salthouse Southstar 37 by Salthouse Boatbuilders Ltd.
series: On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
For the Elliott 35, Elliott 52, Transpac 52 by Salthouse Boatbuilders Ltd.
series: On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
