Worth knowing
Salthouse Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Salthouse Marine is a New Zealand yard tied to the designer Bob Salthouse. He had been building boats with his brother John since the early 1950s before setting up his own company in 1983. Over half a century he drew some 750 boats: sailing yachts such as the Cavalier 32 and 39, the Corsair launches, wooden boats, workboats and big motor yachts, up to an aluminium superyacht. Under the Salthouse Marine name the later output centred on large motor yachts. The company eventually went into receivership and closed, yet the Salthouse name is still woven into New Zealand boatbuilding.
Our model records hold six designs, all listed as motor yachts. The range simply carries the yard name and a number: Salthouse 54, 57, 65, 65Q, 68 and 82. The Salthouse 57 has the longest run, starting with build year 2000. The 68 follows from 2008 and the remaining four from 2009. Every one of the six ends in 2015, so none reaches into recent build years. Lengths run from 18.1 metres for the Salthouse 54 to 24 metres for the Salthouse 82. The 65 and the 65Q both measure 21.1 metres, while the 68 comes to 21.5 metres. Four of the six yachts are longer than 20 metres.
A yacht of this size is a small ship to run. With the newest entries dating from 2015, every Salthouse on the market today is a used boat, often with several previous owners and a long logbook. Before buying, a full survey out of the water is worth the time: hull and stern gear, shaft seals, the engine room, generators and the wiring that has grown with each refit. Teak decks and their caulking age visibly on boats that spent years in strong sun. Many of these yachts were built for coastal cruising with guests on board, so look closely at the tenders, davits and the state of the galley and heads as well.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Which is the largest Salthouse in the model records?
For Salthouse Marine: The Salthouse 82 at 24 metres.
It is listed from build year 2009 and, like every design in the range, runs until 2015.
The smallest is the Salthouse 54 at 18.1 metres.
What does the Q in Salthouse 65Q stand for?
For Salthouse Marine: Our records do not explain the letter.
The 65 and the 65Q share the same length of 21.1 metres and the same build years from 2009 to
2015, so the Q marks a variant of the same hull size.
