San Juan Composites; cover, cost and conditions
San Juan Composites, also known as San Juan Yachts, builds in Anacortes, Washington, on the edge of the island group that gave the yard its name. The people behind it are Donald Campbell and Randy McCurdy. They made their mark with the San Juan 38 and then the San Juan 48 express cruiser, a motor yacht drawn in the manner of a New England lobster boat: long, lean hull, upright bow, low superstructure and a lot of wood below. Construction is composite throughout. On the flybridge model the house is a single vacuum-infused moulding of E-glass and Corecell foam with vinylester resin. The yard deliberately keeps its numbers small.
Our model records list six designs, all entered as motor yachts. The smallest is the SJ 30 at 9.97 metres, listed from 2005 to 2017. Above it sit three boats of about 12.4 metres: the SJ 38 and the SJ 40, both from 2005 to 2014, and the SJ 40 ST, which joins in 2007 and also ends in 2014. At the top are the SJ 48 and the SJ 48 FB, each 15.58 metres long. The SJ 48 runs from 2005 to 2014, while the flybridge version already appears in 2004 and stays until 2017. The list therefore spans build years 2004 to 2017, and no line reaches into recent production.
Composite hulls of this kind are stiff and light, and they reward an owner who keeps water out of the core. On a used San Juan, look at every deck fitting, stanchion base and hatch frame, because that is where moisture can find its way into foam. A moisture meter survey of deck and hull is time well spent. The varnished joinery inside is part of the appeal and shows quickly whether the boat has been cared for. These yachts were built for fast cruising in sheltered and coastal waters, so check engine hours, shaft alignment and the state of the cooling systems as well.
