SAS Wrighton Bi-Loup; cover, cost and conditions
Wrighton Yachts is a builder from Béthune in northern France, known for the Bi-Loup range: sailing yachts on twin keels that need little water and stand upright when the tide goes out. In 2013 the range included four models from 26 to 36 feet. That year the sailing press described the yard as twenty years old and reported that the commercial court in Arras had placed it in receivership. According to the report the trouble began with the new Bi-Loup 365, where one mould was eight centimetres out against the hull mould, which delayed deliveries.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts of 7.8 metres. The Bi-Loup 26 runs from 2007 to 2016 and the Bi-Loup 78 from 2011 to 2018. Neither reaches the most recent build years, so the boats are between eight and nineteen years old. The Bi-Loup 26 carries a fractional rig, twin keels drawing under a metre and an inboard diesel. She is meant for weekends and coastal hops, and the keels let her dry out on sand or mud and launch from a trailer.
Twin keelers are built to take the ground, and that is exactly what to check on a used one. Look closely at the keel roots for cracks in the gelcoat, signs of movement or weeping around the bolts, and at the inside of the hull above them. The rudder on a boat that dries out regularly can also suffer, so check its bearings and the lower edge of the blade. A fractional rig puts more load on the backstay and spreaders than many owners expect. Because the yard went through receivership, keep every document that came with the boat, including the builder's plate and the CE paperwork.
