The Esse name belongs to Schuchter Sportboot AG of Stäfa on Lake Zurich, founded by Josef Schuchter. The yard builds one-design keelboats and quick cruisers with a sporting edge. The best known designs were drawn by the Italian naval architect Umberto Felci. A hallmark of the Esse 850 is the torpedo-shaped ballast bulb on its keel, and the class limits total crew weight. The 850 gained its own international class association in Europe in 2005, while the 990 was drawn as a larger sister for a crew of four, equally at home as a daysailer or on a coastal race course.
