Seafarer Fiberglass Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Seafarer Fiberglass Yachts was an American sailboat builder from Huntington on Long Island, New York. It began in the 1950s by importing sailboats built in Amsterdam by De Vries Lentsch, and in 1964 started its own production in a building first put up as a supermarket. Bill Tripp drew early designs; in the 1970s most boats came from McCurdy & Rhodes, the Seafarer 34 among them. Hulls were hand laid fibreglass with balsa cored decks, fin keels and skeg hung rudders. The yard closed in 1985 after the early eighties recession hit the sailboat market.
Our model records list ten Seafarer designs, three sailboats and seven sailing yachts. The sailboats are the 6.6 metre Seafarer 22, the 6.5 metre Seafarer 23 and the 7.2 metre 24 Futura. The Futura line also includes the 8.6 metre 29 Futura; both Futura models start in 1971, the earliest year in our records. The 26 measures 7.85 metres and the 30 9.15 metres, and four boats pass 10 metres: the 34 K, the 37, the 38 C and the 11.57 metre Seafarer 38. Build years run to 1984.
A Seafarer today is a classic American cruiser of forty years or more. Balsa cored decks reward a moisture check around fittings and stanchions, and old chainplates and standing rigging deserve a close look before any longer passage. The smaller boats up to 7.2 metres can live on a trailer; the larger ones are happiest on a mooring or a marina berth with a winter ashore.
