Seahog Boats was based in Lancashire, in north-west England, and built small angling and fishing boats in GRP, with hull, deck and superstructure all in glassfibre. Besides the designs in our records, lines such as the Seaprince, Hunter, Samurai and Trio are known. Many Seahogs share a modified cathedral hull. On the Trooper, for example, a central V forward softens the ride in a chop, while aft the hull widens into the multi-keeled cathedral shape. That keeps the boat steady when drifting or lying at anchor, which is exactly what sea anglers want. Plenty of Seahogs from the eighties and nineties are still fishing today, often with a small auxiliary engine on the transom.
Our model records list three designs, all classed as motorboats and all around five metres. The oldest is the Seahog Shortie at 5 metres, built from 1992 to 1998 and also known among anglers as the Superhog. The Sea Jeep at 4.57 metres followed from 1997 to 2004, and the Sea Trooper at 4.65 metres from 2002 to 2008. Each run overlaps the next by a few years, and together they span 1992 to 2008. None of the three reaches the most recent build years, so these boats are now between almost twenty and more than thirty years old and change hands almost entirely on the second-hand market.
An older GRP angling boat is usually honest to assess. Look for soft spots in the deck, especially around rod holders and cleats, and for crazing or star cracks in the gelcoat where gear has been dropped. A cathedral hull has several keels that take the weight on the trailer, so check them for wear from rollers and beaching. The transom needs a close look too: decades of outboard use can let water into the core. Wiring for the fishfinder and navigation lights is often owner-installed and worth tracing. A boat with a recent engine service and a sound trailer is worth more than a shiny one without.
