Seahopper Folding Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Seahopper builds folding wooden dinghies in Wellington, Somerset, and the boats have come out of this workshop since 1974. Geoff Lennard developed them in the seventies and later sold the business to Steve Rea. The hull is made of 5 mm plywood, with the panels joined by a PVC membrane that acts as a hinge when folding and stays watertight. To put one together you slot in the thwarts, the seats and the transom, and the boat becomes rigid. Folded, a Seahopper lies flat: on a roof rack, against a garage wall or hung on a yacht's guardrails. No trailer is needed, and that is the whole point of the brand.

Our model records list three designs, all classed as sailing dinghies and all listed from build year 2012 into the most recent build years. The smallest is the Seahopper Crafty Scamp at 2.03 metres and about 22 kilograms; from 1997 to 2000 it was sold as the SeaScamp. The Seahopper Lighter measures 2.4 metres and weighs around 24 kilograms. The largest is the Seahopper Kondor at 3.05 metres and roughly 34 kilograms, launched in 1997 under the name Kontender. Each comes as a rowing, motor or sailing version, with a lug sail, a Holt rig with mainsail only or, on the larger boats, a Bermuda rig with jib.

A folding plywood boat rewards a little attention. The PVC membrane along the folds is the part to watch: look for cracks, lifting edges or chafe where the boat rubs when stowed. Plywood edges and the slots for thwarts and transom should be kept sealed and varnished, because water that gets into the end grain is what shortens the life of any plywood boat. Store it dry and out of strong sun. On a used Seahopper, assemble it fully before buying, check that every part fits without force, and inspect the outboard bracket and rudder fittings, which take the most strain.
