Seaquest Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Seaquest Ltd was set up in 1993 by Mike and Dawn Eaton, with its first factory in Poole on the Dorset coast. In late 2005 the business moved to Dubai as part of a joint venture. In England it built cruiser-racers of between nine and twelve metres, drawn by well known British designers. The HOD 35, short for Humphreys One Design, began as an idea of Captain David Allen: a 35 footer not shaped by a rating rule but built to handle a seaway, with accommodation fit for real passages. Rob Humphreys produced the design. The Prima 38 came from the board of Stephen Jones and was built by Seaquest from 1998.
Our model records list five Seaquest sailing yachts. The Sequest 32 at 9.51 metres runs from 1993 to 2000 and is the oldest. The Humphreys One Design (HOD) 35 at 9.66 metres and the Seaquest Yachts Prima 38 at 11.6 metres both run from 1995 to 2002. From 2001 come the SJ 320 at 9.52 metres, until 2007, and the Sequest 36 at eleven metres, until 2008. None reaches recent build years. The Prima 38 is the largest boat of the brand, four of the five stay below eleven metres, and three cluster closely around 9.5 metres.
Every Seaquest is now a used boat of at least eighteen years. Being cruiser-racers, many have spent seasons on the race course, which means a careful look at the keel to hull joint, the rudder stock and bearings and the mast step. Sail wardrobes on such boats tend to be large and of mixed age. Check the deck around winches and tracks for soft spots, and look at the age of the standing rigging. A survey out of the water is the sensible starting point before any purchase.
